Homeschooling with Pop Culture: Smokey and the Bandit Edition

Contrary to the original “in the box” ideas I had about what homeschooling should look like, I have learned to find the educational nugget in just about anything. Gone are the days where I envisioned us sitting at the kitchen table and completing workbooks quietly, of completing daily science projects and beginning each morning with a prayer and the pledge. Nope. That might work in some houses, but not mine. We have certain things that we DO complete daily… or on most days, anyways… and then add other stuff in as I see fit. If something is piquing their interests, we pursue it. There are days when I feel like my ears are bleeding and that I cannot take one more defiant look when I ask one of the boys to finish his schoolwork. I wonder why in the hell I thought homeschooling my kids would be a good idea, and I bang my head on the wall in frustration at the check my hypomanic idealism wrote that my crumbling mind is now having to cash. Then there are other days when I feel like I am the best mom in the world, champion of all things, and amazing giver-of-knowledge.…

McWane Center Review

The kids and I have been dying to visit the McWane Center in Birmingham, Alabama for quite sometime, but random life situations and sickness have kept us from going. We arrived, and after parking in conveniently-located parking deck, we took the elevator that opened into the McWane Center lobby at landing. Immediately, we saw scores of excited school-kids milling around with their teachers and chaperons. I inwardly groaned, thinking that the exhibits would be crowded and that it would be hard for me to keep up with my own children in such a crowd. We made our way to the ticket counter, stood in a fast-moving line and received our tickets for the science center and chose the movie we wanted to see in the IMAX theater. The customer service representative was very helpful, and suggested that we see “Island of the Lemurs” because she thought it would appeal to all of my children. We applied our sticker badges and entered the science center. WOW. There are so many different exhibits to explore that we had trouble deciding what to look at first!
